Flash is really the way to go, hard drives make noise during recordings,
they also wont survive a drop. Flash used to not provide much space but now
you can easily get several gig which is all the first hard drives offered.
Hard drives also drain batteries much quicker than flash based units.

I'd pay for a unit like that, but without the memory cards. That is, if it
were a hard-drive based player, even if that meant I had to pay a little
extra, I'd go for it. Not sure if it's the book port or currier, but one of
them I know takes those cards that you have to put in in order to play or
store anything. I'm looking for something hard-drive based like the Archose
or I-river, just for an example.
