Good points have been made on this issue.
I see the main point as this, be honest.  But use some
consideration, deplomacy, as well as tact.
I can be very outspoken.  But I try really hard to watch
what I say.  I also try not to hurt the feelings of others.

If her tone is "brusque" as you call it, why have
at least ten people I know of personally, and I don't know a ton of people on
the net unsubscribed and in some cases, stopped volunteering altogether
due to harsh criticism by E. and others?  People need to realize
that brusqueness in one affects others.  Especially if one is new,
they  will not know E. is brusque.  they will assume rudeness was
implied.  We should not have to tell new volunteers, "Oh, so and so is
brusque, go ahead and ignore that, they've gotten better".  We've said
this over and over and I think that need not be said. Instead, people need to
realize they are writing to a public list and curb their emotions and
brusqueness, as it were. E. has been told for years she needs to be more
mindful.  this is just the last straw, apparently.
