I've also found that the WIA drivers are better suited to K1K gray-scale
setting.  Win 98 doesn't support WIA as far as I understand.

What version of K1000 and what scanner? Some scanners provide an incorrect 
number of bytes per line when grayscale is used, which gives us a badly 
distorted image. We've worked around that as time goes on, so newer 
versions and patches tend to fix the more common scanner problems.
