Well, smile, I am happy to do that, smile.

I enjoy the scanning is ironically relaxing for me. But I also have a similar
impulse, smile, call it the "must be scanning" impulse, smile.

needless to say I have a lot of books.

  Hi, Shelley!

It is just so odd... it's like I can't stand having a book come in and out of
the house now without wanting to scan it to add to the collection. So, every
time the call goes to the library, I feel as if I have to scan the book before
it is returned. Compounding matters is the fact that we have several hundred
books in the house and when people put out early requests for some of the older
mysteries and series like Cherry Ames, I couldn't help but try and find
bargains on eBay. I have enough to keep me busy for a year, and that is if I
scanned the book practically every day. Wink.

Since I like to have a book present when I proof, anytime someone decides
they want to scan something I have in home, that is just fine by me. I really
appreciate you scanning as many of the Cherry Ames as you have and then letting
me proof them. It wouldn't be the same just reading them without working on
them for me.

Bookshare is just a tremendous resource!

  Thanks!

  Valerie

Hi Valerie, And those of us who can scan till the cows come home, smile, but
don't particularly enjoy proofing will be happy to help when you can't. Smile.

Actually, flopping books takes far less manipulation for me than holding a
book. I have so little grip in my hands that I cannot hold a pencil the
standard way. I could use a book holder and page turner, but they are also
considered AT and run $3-7000, depending on features and sizes of books they
handle. Turning single pages is a problem for me either way and I often need
to use a tool to separate pages. I only scan a couple of pages at a time and
my hands cannot hang on to anything for more than a few seconds in a fixed
position. I also have dyslexia, although my compensatory strategies work very
well unless I am quite fatigued.

In short, reading a book a page at a time with lengthy breaks does not make
for fluid reading, but scanning at a slow pace does not interrupt any work
process, but reading on screen can then be done for hours if desired. Holding
a book aggravates my carpal tunnel and RA, but mixing activities and scanning
does not seem to. I prefer proofing, though, since I can do it faster. Still,
since I have access to so many books and Nichole has such desire for books, I
would be doing it regardless to get more books to her.

I may not always be able to scan, but I will do it as time and
energy/health permit, at a manageable pace, while I can.

    Hope that makes sense.

    Valerie

I am curious about something. If you are capable of manipulating a book to
scan it -- and I have found that it takes quite a bit of manipulation -- how
does the restrictions on your ability to use your hands prevent you from
reading a book enough to qualify you for a Bookshare subscription? Note that I
am in no way suggesting that it doesn't; I just don't understand and so I am
curious.

Funny you mention that. Even after donating $30 to another volunteer,
afterI submit my current proof I will have my $75 in my account. How cool
isthat?
Even if I have to come up with the paperwork fee it will be a great
deal!Thanks!Valerie> -----Original Message-----> From:
