Hi Terry,

Yes, very inconsistent, and if for any reason you have the overtype function turned on with "show all" turned off, there is no warning provided as you merrily overtype hidden text that you may have preferred or needed to keep in the document. I like the hidden text being displayed where an entire paragraph is hidden. It would be quite nice (not a "must have", though) to have that functionality carried across into hidden words/text within a sentence. Microsoft doesn't appear to be at all concerned with continuous functionality improvements to Word, only to user interface improvements (but with a nod of the head to limited exceptions such as PDF creation). I'm still waiting for a new version of Word that has sufficient functionality changes to make me want to buy it, but that's a separate topic, let's not go into that.

I've never thought of it as being a macro, any more than autotext being a macro, the red squiggly lines for incorrect spelling being a macro, or, when adding a numbered heading to a document, the sequential heading numbering being created by a macro. To me, they're all system functions (code). Also, who really knows whether the behaviour was intentionally built in? If not, that explains why it's not consistent.

Neil.

Gedday Neil,

I don’t have any particular problems with it either as I generally have the ‘show all’ turned on so I can see ‘all’ things. I was concerned that there appeared to be a macro running (as there obviously is) even with macros turned off.

I reckon Word is being a little inconsistent, though, in that if you have hidden text of words within a sentence with ‘show all’ turned off and type there, it doesn’t turn on the ‘show all’ and display what you’re typing; it just lets you keep typing with nothing showing up.

Cheers,

Terry

Using Word 2003, on my machine the hidden text becomes visible by "show all" turning on automatically (I normally have "show all" turned off") but remains formatted as hidden text. What is happening following Terry's steps below is that the new text is NOT being typed at the start of the previous line 3, but is actually being typed at the beginning of the hidden line 2. Word turns on "show all" to warn/advise you that you are typing in an area containing hidden text. I don't have any real problems with that behaviour and can see the reasoning behind it.

Do the following extra step:

With "show all" turned on, position the cursor at the beginning of line 3. Then turn off "show all" so that line 3 becomes line 2. Start typing ... the hidden text does not display, because we are now not typing in an area of the document containing the hidden text.

As Ken said, but with the new (unhidden) text at the beginning of line 2 instead of line 3! Bizarroworld. I’m using Word 2010.

The hidden line reappears in Word 2003, even though the Hidden attribute is still applied to the original text in that line.

Here’s a little experiment for you.

Type three separate lines of text separated by paragraph marks.

Make the middle line (including the para mark) hidden font.

If not already, make the hidden text not visible. The entire row should disappear. Line 3 becomes line 2.

Put the cursor at the beginning of the new line 2 and type a letter.

Tell me what happens on your computer.
