Using Word 2003, on my machine the hidden text becomes visible by "show all" turning on automatically (I normally have "show all" turned off") but remains formatted as hidden text. What is happening following Terry's steps below is that the new text is NOT being typed at the start of the previous line 3, but is actually being typed at the beginning of the hidden line 2. Word turns on "show all" to warn/advise you that you are typing in an area containing hidden text. I don't have any real problems with that behaviour and can see the reasoning behind it.

Do the following extra step:

With "show all" turned on, position the cursor at the beginning of line 3. Then turn off "show all" so that line 3 becomes line 2. Start typing ... the hidden text does not display, because we are now not typing in an area of the document containing the hidden text.

Neil.

As Ken said, but with the new (unhidden) text at the beginning of line 2 instead of line 3! Bizarroworld. I’m using Word 2010.

The hidden line reappears in Word 2003, even though the Hidden attribute is still applied to the original text in that line.

Cheers,

Here’s a little experiment for you.

Type three separate lines of text separated by paragraph marks.

Make the middle line (including the para mark) hidden font.

If not already, make the hidden text not visible. The entire row should disappear. Line 3 becomes line 2.

Put the cursor at the beginning of the new line 2 and type a letter.

Tell me what happens on your computer.
