Hi Ray.

Most people that produce podcasts use a digital editor of one sort or
another, just to iron out the creases so to speak. Many use SoundForge
which costs about £300. This is a really professional digital editor and I
believe extends the needs of many currently using it. Personally, I use a
program called GoldWave. GW or GoldWave costs about £25 and it's very
accessible. Not only do I use it for editing podcasts, but just about for
everything else. It turns your computer into a tape recorder. I record
BBC2's Album Chart Show amongst others, for listening to on another device.
I also split wrapped CD's and edit these prior to burning onto a CD. I've
been using GW for about five years and could not do without it.

Best wishes.
Andy
