Hi Steve. The DS30 or mile stone would only be required as a dictation machine in this case so could almost live with a combined mike and earphone jack. The one reason that a dedicated dictation machine would be advantageous is that it can be used to transcribe notes into text with Dragon Naturally Speaking. This is not 100 percent accurate but it can certainly save time. The olympus would be better in this respect. regards graham ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steve Nutt" <steve@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, February 16, 2007 11:11 PM Subject: [access-uk] Re: Olympus DS-50 Voice Recorder / MP3 player Hi Graham, If you want a recorder that small, you could consider the Milestone also. It is as small as the Olympus and does record at 192 with an external mic, and yes, it is accessible. And it does have the lanyard. It does have the down side of sharing the headphone with the external mic jack, so in that respect, it is not as nice as either the Edirol or the Olympus, but it does record higher bit rate than the Olympus. I think the Olympus would still be the better of those two though, since the headphone socket is separate on it. The one thing I don't like about either of these machines, is they both have automatic gain control, and you can't turn it off. The limiters on them sometimes gets in the way, but the limiter on the Olympus, from what I have heard is quite good. This was the main reason for me sticking to the Edirol, because I can have more control over the recording by setting the recording levels manually. I think the Olympus and the Milestone would get overloaded in loud situations, like concerts etc. All the best -- Computer Room Services: the long cane for blind computer users. On this subject, Someone I know is looking for a digital recorder you can hang round your neck while carrying it. Does the DS230, 40 or 50 have a hole for a lanyard? I purchased one from Hagger Electronics and am more than satisfied with it. The unit is about 95 per cent accessible, which is good enough for me. I've also purchased a pair of BSM9 binaural microphones and am getting good quality recordings. It's easy to convert files from WMA to MP3. As usual, we've been ripped off here in Britain on the price but then what's new? I've also used the recorder as an MP3 player for film sound tracks and audio books and have no axe to grind with the quality of the playback. It's small and inconspicuous when taken outdoors and I think Olympus should be commended for making the effort to give us some sort of accessibility. I do wish people didn't always look for perfection; it doesn't exist. It seems to me that whatever a company tries to do to make their products usable by blind people, there will always be folks who are just never satisfied. The Olympus does exactly what I want and, like Andy, I have no regrets about buying one.
