My daughter and I spent about three hours starting at 7:30 A.M. today, cruising the BVG. We exited Hwy. 39/51 on "W" and as we headed north, I spotted a hen Greater Prairie Chicken in a shrub about 15 feet off the road. She obligingly posed for a couple photos and then flew to the north. As we traveled around, we could hear Prairie Chickens booming at nearly every place we stopped. We observed a total of 17 dancing and booming on 2 different booming areas, (one equipped with a blind and one not), without leaving the traveled road. Most were scope views of 1/4 mile or more, but definitely identifiable. We also heard at least 6 different Western Meadowlarks and saw over 50 Sandhill Cranes. Those folks that are attending the Prairie Chicken Festival next weekend should have a great time if the weather cooperates.
