Bodi,

I sure know what you mean about getting overly involved.
I did the same thing since I had my computer for about 11 years I wanted to be sure my new one could last as long as possible.

However, you can sure depend on the advise from the people in this group. It is an unusual group of knowledgeable people who like to share their the information and expertise, and they remember that everyone starts out as a beginner.

My new computer came with Vista and qualified for the free upgrade. I applied on line for the upgrade, and they will send out a free DVD in about 2 weeks. Some companies will charge a fee for handling or shipping if I am not mistaken. But the Gateway set up includes the DVD without any cost to me.

Also since my version of Vista was the home premium edition it qualifies ONLY for the Win7 home premium edition. That is, for example, you can't have a Vista Professional and get an upgrade to Win7 Ultimate version.

As you consider various computers just check or ask if they qualify for the free upgrade.

According to all the reading I have done it seems that since Win7 is based on Vista that the upgrade will be quite an easy on if you do a fresh install. I think however, I will try to keep Vista and do a dual boot with Win7. Others have done it without problems, so I hope I don't run into too much trouble.

I opted for the 64 bit version since think it may help avoid having an obsolete computer in a few years as things are slowly switching form 32 to 64 bit. I am not an expert on that so maybe others can offer their thoughts on that subject. I have been slowly reinstalling some of my old programs and out of about 20 installs only 1 didn't work.

I hope this helps to clarify things a little.

BRIAN

Hello Brian;
I have been following your quest in buyng a new computer with interest. It's the sort of thing I do and I get myself overly involved and it takes me way too long to make a decision. I am also not a technophile and I don't have the confidence that many of the people who offer their advice in this community have. A while back I was so scathingly ridiculed for a question I asked that I have not asked another. However, I have a question for you. You said you are waiting for the upgrade to Win 7. Was the upgrade part of the pkg price? Will your current set-up with this new computer support an upgrade easily? I read a comment that a Vista 64bit has some compatibility issues with Win 7. Here again I am timid in writing this bec I may be confused. Somehow I think you may be more understanding. Bodi > Date: Sat, 5 Dec 2009 22:52:50 -0600
