[THIN] Re: repost: limit access to applications via time frame

Someone suggested using crontab but since I run Win/IIS that turned into
scheduling my IIS services to start/stop. This certainly would work for the
most part, and much less expensive to throw up additional IIS servers than
Citrix servers. This only brings up another question I havn't answered yet.

If your using a NFuse/webclient only environment. What's preventing someone
from downloading Citrix PN client from citrix.com and figuring out how to
create a link to your applications?

That's a good one. Simple enough too. I like it.

Of course I never said it was a 'clean' solution Ron . . just a possible
option. :)

There is yet another that comes to mind with your scenario as stated
below,
that does keep things rather simple.=20

If you have the servers to spare, you could specify the pub app you want
to
have time restriction on, to only 1 server in the farm. Then have a
batch
job that disables logins to that server for your maintenance time frame,
and
run another batch job that enables them again.=20

Almost like an adaptation of a shutdown script, shut off logins, drop
current connections, run the maintenance, then allow logins again.

Of course this all depends on the environment, and whether or not a
single
server in the farm can be made unavailable for a period of time.

Just a thought,

J

Sure. BUT. I can see two scenarios (for sure with Citrix) that this is
too much.=3D20
1- only want to limit this to a specific application. Like a money
trading or transferring app that should only be run during banking
hours.=3D20

2- An app that has a backend that needs to have regular maintenance
(lets say everyday between 8 and 9 pm)

Now in both of these you want users to be able to logon and use other
apps. Just not this one..

Actually there's a policy setting available both in NT 4.0 and Win 2k to
force users to log out when login hours expire.

If you use log in hours, be sure to set up a script to boot the users
out, when log-on time expires. Login hours won't force a user out, just
keeps em from coming back in.

The quick and dirty way to do this would be to set user login =
hours.=3D20

Hoping to get more coverage on a weekday post here.

Would like to be able to limit access to published applications based on
a time frame throughout the day. I realize this could be done with Load
Manager, but upgrading XPa/XPe will cost a decent amount of money.
($2500)

So if anyone knows of a lower cost solutions, let me know.
