Dave, I think both ideas are fantastic. The kids would be a great legacy for Steve's work and commitment, and I would love to have a concrete reminder of him (figuratively) at a place that I can bird and visit. He did like Magic Ridge. She did know that they would probably be having some sort of service next week. They will know more later and I will try to keep you posted. I get the digest version of Texbirds so the best way to answer questions would be either directly via email or on Facebook. Obviously Steve had a big impact on a number of people in the birding community, and I want to make sure that he is not forgotten. For those who don't have access, Dave Sarkozi posted about our discussion about a suitable memorial for Steve on the Texbirds Facebook page and Brush posted a response: David, Steve had been in the process of getting around to spending the matching funds he had successfully arranged with his young birders group during one of his TOS Kids Birdathon a couple of years ago when he was Prez. The fund raised were designated toward renewing the signage etc. at Magic Ridge at least in part. We spoke about this on a few occasions and there were numerous of Emails between us on the matter....I think perhaps the signs were even perhaps ordered (?) but to date installation and the other improvements has not happened......I for one would be very happy to have a memorial there to him with part of those funds used solely for that purpose. He liked the place a lot he said...A nice view of the bay too....Just a suggestion, I am sure there will be others My response: Brush Freeman, that sounds very nice! I really want to have some sort of memorial in a beautiful birding location, but giving to the kids or at least novice birders is also a must. Lets see what we can do. Brush's response: I agree 100% All TOS members IMHO should be supporters of the Kids Birdathon, the old farts among us need to have someone we can vicariously bird thru via arm chair birding someday. Those future adults/custodians will preserve what has been achieved by so many other members past and present who worked so hard to acquire and/or donated so generously to in time funding or both....I have little doubt with support, today's youth will add much to the TOS legacy given sufficient encouragement and support. We need them more than ever. ******************************* When I told Steve's sister that we were working on something to memorialize Steve's joyful teaching of birding to new birders, that really made her happy. I m not sure that his family knows how much he was loved in the birding community, but I want to show them. Birding has become a passion in my life in the past few years, and Steve was there for most of it. He had a huge impact on my life, I bet that I saw over half of my 500 plus lifers with him, and I bet he has had similar effects on a large number of you. I want his legacy to live on so watch for Dave Sarkozi's post on how we can do something sufficiently big in Steve's name so that he will not be forgotten. If you haven't been on Facebook, the outpouring of love is really nice. His family really liked the posts on his page. Let's show them more.
