I ran that :sfc /scannow and a popup window came up and it said checking
windows files to make sure they are in their original state and it ran for
awhile and then it just went away. It didn't say if there were any errors or
if it fixed anything. Is that how it is supposed to work?

Is it just me or have others noticed that with the OEM Home
edition of XP System File Checker (SFC) does not work? (at least
with Dell XP CDs)
