Related to this question - when installing separate PDU and nearside signals
(e.g. PEEK type equipment), we have been pondering over the preferred
(vertical) separation of the two units on the pole.

The Puffin regs (where the diagram and dimensions show the nearside
signal/PDU as a combined unit) would seem to require (indirectly) that the
two separate units have a minimum separation (<50mm). However, in many cases
having a larger separation (and installing the nearside indicator higher up
the pole) would seem to make more sense - and might avoid the need to
install an additional nearside signal directly above the first.

I would be interested to hear comments from other users.

Subject: [TCUG] Puffin Crossings - Nearside Indicators

Dear All.

This old chestnut has cropped up again.

East Sussex CC have recently converted a pelican crossing to a puffin. So
"what's new" I hear you say. This time its outside a secondary school with
1200 pupils.

The headmaster is none to pleased because at 3 o'clock hundreds of kids
attempt to use the crossing and they cannot see the nearside indicator. We
have installed a second unit above the original, but he's still not happy.
Whilst I tend to agree with his point of view I am not sure what else we can
do. Any ideas would be welcome.

My question is:

Has anybody had a similar experience, particularly outside a school. If so,
what else can we do the help?
Has anybody used far side indicators on a puffin and do you require GOSE
authorisation?

Your comments would be very much appreciated.
