Hi all,
I have a pocket P.C. running a sat, nav. in my wife's car. I had hoped that
that Pocket Hal would make this programme accessible, but it does not. It only
seems to work with the programmes preloaded on the system. The same is true
for Mobile Speak Pocket.
It seems a lot of money to me.

Philip

  Hi.

I'll save Andrew the trouble. Dolphin computers sell Pocket hal and during
the launch offer which I'm not sure is still on but may be, the price is £395
or £495 for full retail version out of offer time. In other words, a good PDA
will cost you less than pocket hal in any event.

  Best wishes, Ibrahim

    Hi Andrew

Do you mind if I ask how much Pocket Hal cost? And what can you run it with?

      Hi.

That was probably hal for pocket PC or Pocket Speeks from Coding
Workshop. Ridiculus I think.

Yes, I found a product to make PDA's accessible last night and as soon
as I got excited about this new possibility, I read the rice tag - £300.00!

Just think about it. With all these multimedia applications like
mobile TV and video etc, the one screen will act as an interface and viewing
screen. I think it was the Ipod or something similar that was the first device
that really took off with a graphical Mac like file browser interface. Now of
course, you can use them for videos you can download from Itunes and I bet
mobiles will soon join the rank and file with similar services. Another
problem is that Symbian though made accessible only works on a quarter of the
world's smart phones. Most of the others use Microsoft Windows CE, XP Tablet
edition or third party proprietary software. There are products for Microsoft
Pocket PC like Pocket Hal, but they are mighty expensive.

              Hi.

Well, just wait. The trend now is for the touch screen and
graphical interface.

I had looked at the RNIB phone but I didn't really think it
very practial (Like many things from the RNIB). I know the phones are not
designed for Talks and we're only lucky we can use them by chance, that's the
problem! By nature the phones that are compatible with Talks are the
camera/vidio ones and that is really annoying when you were used to using a
small phone and didn't want to go backwards.

                  Hi Barbara,
The only reason we can have smart phones that can handle
Talks is that we are on the back of a successful mainstream product line. The
mass market is for a phone with camera and display and we have to go along with
it.
If you really don't want to have the screen then use the
Oasis from the RNIB. Sadly it is not a mainstream product and although having
no display is no smaller or cheaper.

                  Philip

The 3230 is fairly sized but from going from using
non-Talks phones such as the 1100, 3100 etc to the Talks compatible models it
is a big leap in size. And all because of a massive screen we don't even need!

                      Hi.

Well, I saw the N70 as I was offered it as a free upgrade
but it isn't worth the Extra. I have a 6680 which suits me fine.

                        Hi Ibraham,
The consolation is that the smaller the phone the
harder it is to find. I have an N70 which has the advantage of being thin, and
fits in my pocket without a bulge.

                          Hi Everyone.

In response to Barbra's question, I have looked at
the Symbian device list and it would seem that only a limited number of phones
can run talks as most of the other manufacturers use either phones with touch
screens or the new graphical symbian interface called UIQ.

Unfortunately, I can't find any phone that runs the
S60 interface that doesn't have a camera. I don't know about size, but you can
be sure that most of the phones that are coming out these days will have these
large screens and high resolution cameras which will inevitably mean chunky
units for the foreseeable future. If anyone knows any different, please fill
us in on this.

                          Best wishes, Ibrahim Gucukoglu
