I will be getting the E72 when it becomes available. It's very much like the E71 but has the newer spec like the camera is 5mp and the interface is like the one on the N86. Talks will not work with the e-mail and text editting in the web browser. It also has the standard 3.5m audio jack unlike the 2.5m jack on the E71. I hope it's got the same solid steel exteria as the E71. I bought my wife the Samsung Tocco Lite phone and it's full touch screen. I can see to use the basic main menu and to dial a number but that is about it. The font in the submenus is very small compared to even standard font. It's like they are trying to cram everything in. I would like to play around with something like that with speech. I probebly would never buy a touch screen phone as you can get productive to a point and then it becomes a struggle to keep up with standard speed of using a phone and writing a message. Neil Barnfather described the touch phone as a table with 9 blocks. You throw your keys anywhere in the middle of that table and you will roughly know where the keys landed but you still have to find them. This concept applies to the touch screen phone. You roughly know where the desired option is on the screen but you still have to find it buy swiping your finger in that area. This is why I would want to buy a cheep accessible touch screen device to see if I can become productive with the touch screen interface.

Hi Jackie.

I only know of functionality through the various mailing lists I'm on, but I did happen to see one the other day in a Three store as I was looking for an upgrade handset and thought I quite liked the keyboard, but I guess it's horses for courses. Like you though, I wouldn't splash out on something I couldn't fully use, so I'll be sticking to my E71 for just a few months longer me thinks *smile*.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Ibrahim

I've never seen it either, and as I don't particularly like the qwerty
keyboard input on such a tiny device, I wouldn't be interested in a
touch screen until I could get some decent speech feedback from it.

Hi Jackie.

Not Pete but can answer your question *smile*. Yes, the N97 is a touch
screen, you have the whole of the front face which is one giant display
and touch sensitive controls. This part of the phone isn't accessible
with talks, but I understand that some people are using the phone's
internal keyboard as an interface with talks which works. I've never
tried this, but unless my brain isn't working *smile*, it is possible.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Pete

Am I right in saying the N97 is a touch screen phone though? How do you
get on with that given the situation with Talks?

Hi Alistair

Yes I have a N97, it is a lovely phone but I still have my trusty N95
8GB which even today keeps up with the spec of most new phones :-)

The N97 does have GPS, it's spec sheet is amazing and the phone is very
responsive . The keyboard is surprisingly nice, much easier to use than
I thought as it's my first querty keyboard phone. I use my phones
features so much that I wanted more like a laptop/phone combo which is
one of the reasons why I went for the N97.

The N86 is very similar spec but as there is nothing wrong with my N95
8GB I wanted to go for something really different in design as they are
a quite similar style. and - the N97 is very different!

No your right, the N97 is not yet supported by Talks, but given time it
will be and I'm a patient person and I believe its worth waiting for as
it's the right phone for me. But I've seen a lot of people going for the
N86 which is pretty much all supported with the exception of email and
part of the internet so if people don't want to wait or don't want the
style of phone that the N97 offers then the N86 is a very good piece of
kit.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Pete

Hi Pete,

Some excellent points there so thanks for that, I note from your
previous posts you have a N97? didn't know it was talks supported, I
know it doesn't have gps but seems a nice phone, what is the keyboard
like?

Thanks much!

Alistair

Don't bother with the Iphone mate, yes it has built in
speech/magnification but despite this it is not that blindy friendly!
There are lots of reviews on the internet for it which have been done
by blind people but the speech is not accurate enough and you will
never get the support and functionality from the accessibility
functions that you would get from Nuance Talks & Zooms and their
associated resellers.

In addition to this, you can't have a spare battery as it's built in
and not changeable (and a lot of blind folks like to carry spare power

with them) plus it has always been behind on basics such as picture
messaging, camera spec, limited Bluetooth connectivity features etc
etc, it may be getting there but it's always lagged on silly things.

I'm not anti the Iphone so don't get me wrong, it's very slick but I
wouldn't suggest someone that is visually impaired choose this over a
Nokia with Nuance support. I know a lot of people with Iphones and
they are not the big deal they are made out to be :-) it's not a phone

that you will have and keep and use for years its more of a temporary
"cool at the moment"
device

Hope this helps and doesn't come across as too anti the Iphone!

Cheers

Pete

Hi Jackie this is very helpful, thanks for taking the time, E mail is
not essential but the internet access is important to me. Will keep
an eye open

for updates from Nuance on this, going the dreaded Christmas shopping
(dragged screaming) this weekend so will have a look at both IPhone
and
N86
in the shop.

Hi Alistair

I can vouch that the keypad and all other buttons on the N86 are
excellent from a non-sighted perspective. As regards Talks, and as
discussed many times on this list, it doesn't work properly with
Email and Internet at the moment.

But the N86 is a cracking handset, and I wouldn't let that put you
off unless it is absolutely imperative that you need these
applications right now.

And, on the N86 theme, I got a nice pouch for mine the other day
which I've been looking for now for some time. I can't use the phone

in it, but what

I
bought is certainly ideal for keeping it clean and free from
scratches.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,

J

Hi folks,

Been in a bit of a dither over choosing a new phone, choice between
either

a
iphone or a talks compatible Nokia. Can someone confirm that neither
of the
major screen readers for mobiles function fully with the n86? Or
maybe
someone knows of a alternitive which will work with talks which is wy

fy, has GPS on board and is a good music player, the n86 seems to be

most of these but also seems to be more of a digital camera than
anything else which does put me off a bit. Anyone currently using the

N86? is the keyboard as good as the N82? going into town at the
weekend to have a look but all help would be appreciated. Off list E
mail is below.
