Go to your local hardware store & buy rolls of 12" high 1/2" hardware cloth
(same stuff many people put around their eaves to keep birds/rodents out) and
attach it to the bottom of the outside of your fence. Hardware cloth isn't as
cheap as (poultry) netting, but with the holes being less than 1/2 the size,
only the tiniest of baby snakes can get through, or the occasional black racer
or garden snake.
When I lived in Georgia, I found out about this the hard way: I had my
super-hunter high-test GSD (could jump up & catch a flying bird) who had killed
a couple of rattlesnakes and finally took a bite from the last one she went
after. Unfortunately, in the area of South Georgia I was in, even the human
hospital had to fly anti-venom up from Jacksonville when people got bitten.
(Found this out when my Godson 6 years old at time got bitten on his foot- he
was in the ER in 20 minutes post bite and had to wait over 2 hours for his
first dose... Because it was so late in administering, he required ANOTHER bag
- and they had to carry that one up from Jville too(!!!)... Poor baby almost
lost his leg and spent 10 days at hospital from a snake bite!) so of course,
there wasn't any anti-venom available for animals so I lost my girl. :(
Just wondering: How effective is the rattlesnake "vaccine"?
