I took them to a woman that has been training snake avoidance for 30 years. She
has a cage full of rattlers (probably 12+ snakes). She straps an e collar on
the dog and the handler takes the dog on a 20' loose lead and walks straight
towards the cage. If the dog doesn't follow, you encourage the dog to
investigate. As soon as the dog shows any interest in the snakes, she zaps
them. The dog of course is startled and runs, you run with the dog and praise
the dog for running away from the snake. So then you go a 2nd time, walk
straight for the snakes, most of my dogs wouldn't go anywhere near the cage
after one zap, a couple trusted me waaaay too much and if I went for the cage,
they were going to follow. Took a couple more zaps before they basically told
me I was crazy, I could go to the snakes, but they were going the other way.
Supposedly it works with any venomous snake, it's the venom the dogs smell and
associate that smell with the "bite" (zap from the collar). I took videos of
some of the dogs if anyone is interested in seeing the training, I would be
more then happy to send it to you.

How do you teach a dog to avoid a snake? Last year we had a copperhead get in
the garage. Fortunately he was not out where the dogs were but where there's
one in the area there are bound to be others.

Both of my dogs that got bit had not gotten the vaccine. Here is AZ, the anti
venom seems to be in short supply, it was not even offered to me as an option
for either dog. Both dogs received sub q fluids, pain meds, heavy doses of an
antihistamine and had blood work done several times. I kept them on Benadryl
for about a week afterwards, but their blood work came back normal after 4
days. Lots of swelling and edema, but they were back to normal after about 10
days. The dog that got bit this past March is 12 1/2 years old, I was very
worried about him, but he's fine, no shot, no anti venom. They have since been
snake trained, hopefully if they encounter another rattler in the yard,
they'll run the other way!!

I would rather pay for the shots then pay 1500 a bag for the anti venom. I
know
the closest place to get the anti venom is in Bend Or and that is about 60
miles
from the cabin. It takes 2 hrs to get there so I need the extra time. I have
snake trained the dogs and they seem to understand to stay away. They are
loose
most of the time. I do keep a heavy mesh wire on the sides of the kennels.
