On the other hand, The Golden Ret. folks have a specialty ( on Friday) plus
the 2 AB shows. The specialty entry is 137. Friday AB entry is 105 and
the AB Sunday is 96.

Please explain why the "economy" effects the GSD entry but not the Golden.

So the challenge is to the clubs. Earn the entries. Encourage new members
even the ones who bought a dog from another breeder.

I used Ken's post only to state that the complaining about declining
entries is neither productive, nor accurate.

The economy is the main fault. Not just the costs of showing dogs, but the
expense of living, surviving, and just paying bills. Yes, costs for dog
shows are up, and yes, handlers are expensive. Gas and travel is way higher
than it used to be, and an average weekend of dog shows is often $500.00 or
more.

But, any hobby can be expensive. It depends on what you want to set as
your priority.

Clubs seldom pick judges to put up their dogs. The clubs want entries, and
try to select someone who will appeal to the most people, and who will do
a good job. I know, I am a member of five specialty clubs, and they all try
to select judges who will draw an entry.

This sport, hobby, avocation or interest, (call if what you will), is a
form of entertainment, and for the enjoyment of those who decide to be
involved. If it isn't fun, if it becomes a burden, if it costs more than you
can
afford, then you should select a different activity.

First and foremost is has to be fun. If you continue to think the shows
are rigged, or the exhibitors are unfriendly, or bad dogs win, then go
somewhere else.

I love the people at the ringside, and I see them welcoming in anyone new
who shows an interest. I encourage anyone new to try it out, and decide if
it is for them. I always like to see the judge, no matter who it is, or
what they do. I now have to have a handler, and I admit, I do hate that.
But, I enjoy encouraging the new kids, (see Summer), and promoting the Junior
handlers. SEND IN YOUR CONTRIBUTION.

When I go to the shows I see so much to enjoy. So many people I love to
talk to. So much good being done for our breed. Such great dogs.

Instead of complaining about what is difficult, look instead to what is
great about this sport. If you don't see it that way, there is golf,
collecting miniature horses, stamps, rabbits and fashion shows.

The wonderful thing about this life is we get to choose. And, if
dedicated, we can effect change. Smaller entries means I can go home at the
end of
the show and do the things Tedi wants me to fix. That is a good thing. I
like the smaller shows, and the increase in quality. The challenge remains
the same, and I enjoy that too.

Change can be good. Bigger is not always better.

Evan L. Ginsburg.
