Ok I will try this for the last time. To make my point I was at  a show where a
young lady was showing for the first time. If I remember correctly her dog was
half german. She had never shown before but was doing her best. Standing ring
side the remarks people made I wanted to walk away and vomit. I had been were
she was knew how it felt. So after the show I went over and talked to her and
tried to help her with stacking (mind you I'm not that great at stacking) and
wondered if she had someone who could double for her. This was two shows in one
day. So when she went back in things worked alittle better for her, but the
remarks outside the ring did not change. After that show her and her mother
come over and talked to me. It was also her dream to show her dog but what no
one else knew was that she had cancer and wanted to show and achieve  her dream
which could have been her last one. I only hoped that those outside the ring
would one day regret
 what they had done.
I also agree that the cost of showing is a lot. I maybe wrong but maybe
handlers should take the economy into consideration and make costs more
reasonable for those who travel far, fixed income or whatever. I understand
they also need to make money but when your booked for a show with 4,5,6 clients
and who knows how many dogs they are doing more then ok when there payment
comes in. If costs were more reasonable maybe people could do more shows. (I
can't complain I chose to entry shows and pay a handler)  Like I said I got
lucky to have someone take me under her wing and travel with me cutting some of
those costs in half really helps. Now because of circumstances I will not be
showing a lot but I still have dreams to full fill.
I think what I'm trying to say is it would be really nice if all those
experienced  people showing would at least try to be kinder ring side and help
someone who may need the help or desire to show. I know not everyone will
listen or take your advice but do you stop showing if you lose at one show.
I would also like to add I have met some very nice people and am greatful
for that. So we all should encourage not discourage people from showing. I'm
getting my young granddaughters ready to show in the ring because they want to
give it a try. I only hope that people are kind and understand they ayoung
ladies willing and wanting to learn. Not sure what I would do if I heard
something ring side about one of them.
Sorry about all the mistakes. Just had surgery and the meds and typing are
not working well together let alone trying to use this laptop. Thanks for
letting me share my opinion for what it's worth.

Just my opinion but I think new people get discourged due to the attitudes of
those ring side. I'm still fairly new and have had it happen to me when I began
showing. I went home in tears more then once but my drive to over come this and
prove I could do it is what kept me going. My success is greatly appericated
and I'm humbled and great for my wins. But starting out was not easy most would
have walked away and not looked back.

I have to add my two cents worth to this thread and speak as a small time
GSD showperson.  I've only finished one dog (only shown three) but I will
never forget the thrill of that futurity weekend when Snowyrivers
Adirondack Joe got his championship with his fourth major (and second 5
pointer).  However, I will also never forget the thrill of my GSD bitch
winning her CDX title.  Someone commented that many people are moving to
performance and I think that is a big factor in declining entries.
Performance is cheaper (I can title a dog in three shows if I'm lucky and
we're both well prepared); I can show the dog myself even though I can't
even walk really fast; I can continue to
 earn more
 titles for that dog and
have fun with him/her for many many years (how many years does a typical
show GSD get shown?); if my performance dog develops an underbite or a
crooked tail or simply doesn't have stellar movement, it's OK -- we can
still compete; and finally, and most importantly, the bond I develop with
that dog through years of training is beyond words.  In regards to the
social aspects of showing, it's easier to find whole-hearted support and
good will at the obedience ring than at the conformation ring.  In
obedience (and rally and agility, etc.) every dog can potentially win by
getting a qualifying score.  Sure, there's placements awarded, but most
people are happy with good scores and are not disappointed to not be high
in trial.  Everybody CAN go
home happy.  In conformation, it's mostly 3
owners who are happy -- WD, WB, and BOB -- and everyone else is basically
disappointed.
I have a 5 month old puppy bitch that I plan on showing (if her bite stays
OK, if her coat remains nice, if her movement is good, etc., etc.) but
the bulk of my money will be spent on training classes and entry fees to
the obedience and rally rings, not entries to conformation and handler fees.
