There are many reasons: the rings are smaller, and many owners cannothandle
the specialty rings; owner handlers have a chance of winning:some ab judges
haven't a clue so it's a crap shoot; if one of the "fab 7"handlers is there,
the ab judge may not know him; sometimes an ab judge might actually know GSDs.
At the top of the owner-handler home-work is knowing your judges. We have a
list in this area of judges whoonly put up a certain kennel, one that brings up
to thirty dogs to a show,all clones of each other because they never go out to
breed. In thisscenario the few really good dogs there look so different these
judgesjust go with one of the look-alikes. OTOH, even these shows can be abit
of fun afterward is you ask the judge about his decision. I have heardanswers
such as, "your dog had too much reach for me" ; "your dog wastoo dark"; " I
thought your dog might be close to being a coat" ; "your dog'snails were too
short ". Yes, these are
but a few of the truly wonderfulresponses from judges. BTW, there are some
good ones, but you haveto do your homework and listen to those who have been
there.

I would say one reason is that many Golden's are owner handled, and they have a
fair shot at winning. As you well know, most GSD are handled by a pro or
someone
that is a heck of a lot younger than I. This increases the cost of showing GSD
.
