Maybe it depends on where you live. Time was, the Golden entry around here
was, even at our smaller shows, 50-70 dogs...and the majority here are
owner-handled. There are always some pros in the ring, but most of the
time, our Golden entries are with their owners.
There are also some people who, as in GSDs, show only Goldens...one of my
oldest friends in dogs was a breeder-owner-handler, and she bred (and
handled) a dog who won their National. She gave up breeding eventually and
just handled Goldens...then she met a new man, a Terrier man, and she
branched out to showing a Terrier now and then. However, basically she is a
Golden handler, with no aspirations to do anything else.
Another Golden friend from here bred and showed them, and showed for
others as well. He had a dog that everyone thought could win the National,
and he hired a professional handler for that...the dog won, but most people
thought he could have won it anyway. My friend was, at the time, handling
one of the other specials entered that year...one the owner'd spent a LOT of
money advertising. My friend's dog was never advertised in other than the
Golden club publication...but he won anyway.
