I was trying to be wise, but I am clearly not, so... ;) The only thing I've been trying to point out is that "white" is not merely a color in this breed. What appears to be a color is something completely different that is carried separately and apart from all other genes. Everyone seems to be saying that the DNA makeup is the same for a white and a non-white GSD, but it is not. The gene that actually makes a GSD appear to be a white dog is something that is unique *only* to those dogs who possess a full complement of both masking genes and who display the white phenotype. In essence, an apparently white-colored GSD can be a GSD, but a regular colored GSD cannot be a white... not because it simply isn't white, but because it is missing an essential part of the "white" dog's genetic makeup. >then the white puppies can be nothing other than German Shepherds The white puppies can be anything GSDCA and AKC say they are. There are soooo many cases where one breed has split into two (or more) and there was no mixed breeding going on. I'll give the one example that's near and dear to my heart. Once upon a time in this country, there was only one cocker spaniel breed until Mrs. Dodge thought otherwise. She pretty much did all the legwork necessary to separate out the "English" cocker types and turn them into the separate breed we have today. Most recently, this was done with the "miniature" Australian shepherds. It has to come from the parent club first. If the GSDCA decides that all oversized, longhaired GSDs should be separated out and called American Flugal Hounds, you can bet AKC would be setting up the new breed in the FSS tomorrow. If they leave on their own, you can call them Shilohs. ;) Look. Why not bring this issue to a full vote of the membership once and for all? What's everyone afraid of? What do we have to do to get this going, because I'm tired of hearing about it. Once upon a time, all the white GSD people were of one mind: they wanted back into the breed and the DQ pulled. But that solution is just not possible now. The Berger Blanc Suisse is here. It's a worldwide, fully (not provisionally) FCI-recognized breed. People, from those alive right now to those in years to come, will want to import them and develop the breed here in peace without having their dogs forcibly added to your GSD gene pool. All the GSDCA awards in the world won't change that. -- Karen C. Email: kmc@xxxxxxxxxxxx ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2011.
