Ed. You have me at a definite disadvantage 'cuz my brain
doesn't work too good anymore and I've never been, you
know, "quick" enough to be on a debate team. I'll just say
that, per your example above, neither of your parent dogs
can be a white German shepherd, not because of their color
alone, but because neither has a complete complement of
the genetic material necessary to "create" a white GSD.
The masking gene is an *additional* gene carried in a
completely different place on the chromosome from all
other 'color' or other genes an individual dog might
possess. It must be present and accounted for - both
copies - in a given GSD in order to make the dog white.

Sometimes, a grapefruit tree is not a grapefruit tree.
Most citrus trees today are grafted and not "purebred" or
grown from seed anymore. Sometimes, what will happen is
that the upper graft dies back and the rootstock grows up
and overtakes the dead part of the tree. When such a thing
happens, your orange tree might very well turn into a
grapefruit tree that now bears grapefruit seeds. ;)
