I do not remember the sable color ever being shunned. Grand Victor CH.
Yorkdom's Pac,
in fact , was a silver sable. This was in the early 60s. There were many
silver sables then,
yet I have not seen one in many years. I had one, a litter mate to GV Donna.
Both
parents black and tan although GV Bonnie Bergere was quite washed out in color.
BTW, a true sable will always have the "monk's mask" This is true in any breed
even
though it may be concealed under the guard hairs if the skull. Lang Skarda
showed some
fabulous sables. He enjoyed doing the "unthinkable", showing to GV an almost
miniature
shepherd and finishing a very impressive "blue".

I remember when the next GSD color to be shunned were the sables. Before they
became so popular in the breed at shows. How black and tan folks would make
little snipes at the sable folks on the internet. After that, black coats
were on the list. Now, you see more and more black coats at shows and in the
Review.
If color wasn't really so important, why are some show dogs dyed? Did the
better coloring give the dog better structure and movement? Why were the
white spots/blazes on chests dyed dark? But, now we see dogs with a pretty
obvious white blaze on their chest?

It is a part, but not the whole dog. So far in conformation we don't look
beyond the color.
