This is always a little hard to understand. Tedi did a great article about
color, it was published in the Review.
We had a bitch with a double sable gene. She was a sable, since if a dog
or bitch carries the sable gene, that is expressed in their color, which is
sable. Even if they have but one sable gene and one for black, black and
tan, or even blue.
Now, a sable can carry one sable gene and one black and tan gene. They will
appear as a sable. If they are bred to another dog with a sable gene and a
black and tan gene, any puppies without the sable gene will be black and
tan. Any puppies with two sable genes will be sable. Any puppies with one
sable gene, will appear sable.
Here comes the tricky part. If the bitch, (like ours) with a double sable
gene produces puppies, since one of the genes they get is from the dam, and
they have to get one gene from her, they will all be sable. Some might
carry the sires gene for black and tan, but since one of the genes will be
sable, they will all appear sable.
To confuse everyone, there is a white masking gene on the alle, that will
hide the color. So, a white might be a true sable, a true black, a true
black and tan, but appear as a white.
If you understand that, you need to get help soon. It is not meant for
mortals to understand. Lord knows, I am confused.
