It is my understanding that the long coat is a fault because it is not
conducive working in the field, it would get snagged on the thistle, burrs etc.
The color white DQ because they would blend in with the sheep, I am sure
someone will correct me if I am wrong. The standard was written based on a
working herding dog and what it was required to do, herd all day, hence
effortless motion etc. I am not in favor of changing the standard, long coats
are a fault as is missing teeth, etc. they can still be shown in a regular
class and take their chances like the rest of dogs who compete with a fault.
I have seen beautiful long coats and fluid movement from them, like every other
dog they need to be judged against what is in the ring on that day. Because
the German Shepherd is so versatile they not only herd, but are used for Police
Work, seeing eye dogs, they are performance dogs in obedience, agility etc. and
in the performance venue I do not see where color or coat texture is an issue
and correct me if I am wrong but there is no coat type or color restrictions
when showing in performance.
It is true that time has evolved and the GSD is not used for herding as much,
but it is still what they were bred and still should be bred to do and being
that versatile dog can also do the police work and the performance venues.
Some dogs bred today can't do it all but there are some that can and they
closely resemble the standard. No matter if we change the standard or not
people will breed what the judges put up or what they preceive the standard to
mean. So why change it.

But, and its a big BUT, we have always allowed it, no specs on the coats at
all. So why just try to remove the fault at all??????
