Liz,

because you will be able to test to find carriers, you will have another bit of
information. It will not be a choice of breeding a nice dog or a healthy dog,
because you know the genetics none of the pups will be affected and therefore
will not be unhealthy. Being a carrier for a gene means that the dog is not
affected, he does nto show anysign of the disease. In the past to fnd out
carrier status one had to bred to an affected animal. If there were no
affected pups in the litter the dog was not a carrier. This rather barabaric
way of determining genetics was somewhat ok for things that appear very early
such as PRA in Setters or Aussies. But it met you had to keep blind bitches
around and breed them to determine the status of the sire. Often these pups
were tested and euthanized.
Because a dog is a carrier doesn't mean he is not healthy. And in today's
bottlenecked pedigrees we need to be able to use every dog that is correct.
This may include breeding affecteds such as any number of dogs that have been
used that didn't OFA such as Houston, Woodside's In Search of and others.
Breeding a non-carrier to an affected would result in NO puppies that
manifested the disease. All would be healthy in that aspect. However all
would be carriers, so you would then breed them to clears and get half clear
and half carriers, but again no pups that are affected. With each generation
you could conciveably produce fewer and fewer carriers while still utilizing
the good genes of the affected dog and never produce an affected pup. That is
the beauty of genetic testing. Again a powerful tool in a breeders's box of
tools.
  Susan

I still have a hard time believing that it will ever come down to making a
choice between having a nice dog and having a healthy dog.

Liz
