[ SHOWGSD-L ] Looking for love in all the wrong places....

The pattern is always similar:
Jane meets John and fall totally into love -
Ah, wait, they do not yet know each other, all they know is
that they have created illusions over the years and then
they meet this person and superimpose those illusions over
them -
You know:
She will cook like Betty Crocker, look like Farrah Faucet
(or am I dating myself), tend kinds like Mother Goose, and
so on!
He, on the other hand, will look like Robert Redford, be as
macho as John Wayne and as tender as Jesus.
Ah, perfection! We have found it and fall into love with it
- not the person but the idea of the person and the
illusions we have placed on them.
Then we marry.......
And the next morning, or the next month or 5 years later we
awake to find that this person is not the illusion we
married so, in our western culture, we set out to change the
person to match the illusion - but alas, they cannot! They
are just who they are, and change, although a constant
process for us all, is seldom fast enough to catch up to the
frustration of our fractures illusions.
I mean, what can you do when you discover that they have
got'yas on their chin, morning mouth, ring around the
collar, brown roots, are in need of Clairol, Just for Men,
Unscented Secret, and need a trip to the gym?
Solution: Put all of your energy into accepting them as they
are rather than attempting to change them. And, if the
change you would like is important, don't start!
With this in mind, my Heidi (what else do you name your
first GSD?) went on all of my dates. The dates consisted of
hiking, fishing, picnicking, or other things that would
accommodate the company of the dog. When the girl objected
or obviously did not enjoy the activity or the accompanying
dog, that was the last date. In the end, Heidi chose my
mate. 49 years later, I am not sorry!
