Why are we even talking about nervous , fearful animals being "placed"?  Our 
standard states that they be EXCUSED form the ring.  Yes, I'm shouting !    Am 
I missing something?  Has our standard
been changed ?

Evan I wish it were that easy..Years of experience equating to ability to
properly judge temperament in the breed
simply isn't the case.  Now I know for a fact you are an excellent judge of
the breed and a great "dog man"  ..no
question.  But don't assume b/c you have the ability and desire to do a
good job in the ring, that other judges
can too, simply because they have been around, probably FAR too long.
This year alone in three separate instances we watched stunned, as judges
(plural) put up puppies to Best Puppy,
that cringed, fought, trembled and  tucked tails on simple approach,
nevermind actually touching them!  It wasn't
a case of puppy antics, or anything...these were RAGING spooks that you
could see from the International Space
Station.
One was so bad it blew anal glands that the whole gallery could smell from
20 feet away....Gawd.
These each were judges with a combined probably 120 years in the breed...so
just because
they have been judging a long time..doesn' t mean they are getting it
right..or maybe they used to
but not anymore.  Really, it was appalling.  And NO we had NO puppies in,
so we had no interest personally
in anything regarding any of the the puppy classes .   Sickening,
disgusting displays of either incompetence or lack of
give a damn.  So we wonder what is wrong with temperaments on some of the
dogs we see, when this type of
horrendous temperament is rewarded ?
I would laugh,
but it really isn't funny, not one damn bit.
