I am in total 100% agreement with everything Kathleen has said here.
This very discussion came up a while back on the OBEDIENCE lists I am on.
99% were totally opposed to the idea. For one of the very reasons Kathleen
mentioned.... one more advertising plum for mutt 'breeders'.

During the conversation with the gal from the AKC, were the words used "a
system like ILP" or "In order to be eligible, the dogs would have to be
spayed or neutered".
IF and I do mean IF (can't stress it enough), the animals being registered
for performance (OBEDIENCE ONLY) had to be spayed or neutered (veterinarian
certificate) with a BIG registration fee, probably would be for that.
However, what I see happening is -- unscrupulous people breeding mixed breed
MUTTS -- Like labradoodles for a profit and having those animals eligible
for MORE promotion by becoming certified Champions of something.
Can you imagine this advertisement:
Performance Champion Labradoodle Pups for sale. $10,000.00. This is the
same breeding that produced AKC Obedience champions.
Sorry -- I have a serious problem with crossbreeding dogs.
And to the person who wrote that it is good for crossbreeding dogs after 5
generations, blah blah. Sorry -- I can't even tell you how strongly I
disagree with your standpoint. The fact that I even read it on a purebred
dog list blows my mind. Beyond that fact - We can do that already by
breeding to animals of European descent. As GSD breeders we have the
opportunity to use Hybrid Vigor without breeding a bunch of mutts.

I understand your concerns about this. But let me offer some food for
thought. If the mixed breed registry is done like the current ILP
process, all the dogs would be required to be spayed or neutered before
being registered. Now these dogs would only be eligible for performance
events, probably only those performance events that don't require a
specific breed or group for participation (obedience, tracking, agility,
rally).
What I have found in watching people who compete in non-AKC events with
their mixed breed dogs is this, if they truly enjoy the competition,
their next dog is a pure bred. The reason is that there is no
predicting the traits in mixed breeds and with pure breds there is at
least a degree of predictability. And if they don't enjoy the
competition, they are one dog and out. While there may be people who
would compete with mixed breed after mixed breed, from my observations,
they would be maybe less than 5%.
Doesn't exposing these people to pure bred dogs during the competition,
further the interests of pure bred dogs? I think it does.
I would welcome AKC including mixed breeds in performance, as long as
they are required to be spayed or neutered.

I received a call from the AKC yesterday. I thought oh goodie,

Nope, it was a survey. They asked me 5 questions --- ALL pertaining to
the
following:
Would I be in favor of the AKC starting a service that allows MIXED
BREED
DOGS to be "registered". For mixed breed dogs to be eligible for
competition in AKC events. I don't know about the rest of you, but I
thought the whole point of all KENNEL CLUBS was to promote the breeding
and
perfection of the PUREBRED DOG.
I sure hope that someone at the National takes Carmen by the hand and
tells
him he better get that organization under control!
I mean for pete's sake! First this Petland thing, then this Hunte
thing and
now "mixed breed" dogs?
