Problem is of course.........if you take your dog anywhere.....to shows, etc.
it can be exposed to a
mosquito that bit a dog or wildlife critter that has heartworm and one mosquito
bite from that is all
it takes. Even horses and cows can have heartworm and it does not kill
them....but they carry it.
IF you live in a world always above 9,000 ft. I guess you must be safe.......

I don't know about Alaska but there is no heartworm mosquito where I live .
The vet told me that the mosquito that carries it does not live above 9000 ft.
The problem is that if you ever go anywhere ( even to the grocery store in my
case) they could be exposed, so I use preventive in the summer . Would have to
go a long way to need it during the winter .
I think my vet must think I shop at Prather's market in Fairplay instead of
City Market in Buena Vista . LOL
