Evan .... Are you sure we are both talking about the same breed?
First of all I did not not imply or state any reference to German dogs from
Germany, that is your input.
Secondly aloofness has nothing to do with their working ability. It does
however show their intelligence on reading people.
The difference between kennel dogs in Germany and most kennel dogs in the US is
that those in Germany are also trained to work.
I do not see it the same. The dogs in Germany are seldom house dogs .
They are kept in a kennel and as both standards call for, they are to be
aloof. We want dogs that will adapt to all conditions, including becoming
house dogs.
That does not mean they can't do the work,but often are more human
oriented that dog oriented. It is a different use of our breed, not
better or worse. Certainly not "softer".
The key word in your above statement should be "use". If you put the GSD to
"use" then by some means you would be working the dog.
To clarify my definition of "softer" so you have a better understanding of what
I am posting .... When you modify the correct temperament of the German
Shepherd Dog and continue to breed like temperament which has also been
modified you will eventually produce a spook.
And there is something definitely wrong with that!

and I would never be able to get near the van. But, when Ann brought him to
me, he remembered me and we reunited out friendship.
I think Ann was being nice to me because I put up her dogs. Or maybe not.
That is what I want in my German shepherd, not matter what country he comes
from.
