We have had good luck with German/American crosses, I think it depends on what
you're working with.
Can Sel US/Can Ch Pastor Burgos is a beautiful dog of excellent character,
sired by a Kirschental dog out of one of Frank Tate's bitches, and he has also
proven to be a good sire. He is the father of our dog Dante, as well as the
young bitch who was Best Puppy in KC this summer.
We have a young male out of Bronson and a Liedo daughter (Liedo was a German
import who was an AKC champion but was also 3X Sieger in this country) who is
very handsome and we expect him to finish. We also showed a bitch a few years
ago, finished her in almost straight shows at the all-breeds, who was sired by
GV Honky Tonk Man out of a mostly Wienerau bitch......bred to Bronson, she
produced a bitch who won a large puppy class at the Canadian Nationals, won 6-9
under Vicky Roye at the US National weekend, had several specialty Best Puppy
awards and I finished her myself at the all-breeds.
Kent Boyles has had many good German/American crosses; just last year he was
showing a lovely bitch called Sapphire who is sired by one of his imports out
of an American show bitch.
Karin Wagner has also had good success with the breedings she did w/Jim
Fiemereck, as did Dan and Marilyn Smith.
Helen Gleason has certainly had some beautiful animals who are of "mixed"
descent.
I'm sure there are many others out there, these are what came immediately to
mind.
I think it is very possible to do, just remembering that we may not be as aware
of some of the faults/issues in the pedigrees of imported dogs....and that
these breedings are complete outcrosses and may not give you what you want, or
at least not in the first generation. But breeding shouldn't be about instant
gratification, but more about a long term plan for breeding the best possible
German Shepherd Dog.
I have had the best success w/these crosses when the other animal was more
closely line-bred. JMHO, Sheree
