Bill makes the statement that " great rear drive gained in importance...". IMO rears may have gained in importance, but just because a dog follows through with good extension with the foot close to the ground does not mean it has a "great" rear. From my perspective of over forty five years of observing GSD gait in the show ring, contemporary dogs do not have the powerful rear drive of yesteryear. The great rear is not only correct in it's action but is well muscled and powerful; the great rear drives the dog forward on a low arc over a relatively large amount of distance at all speeds. I see a lot of GSD's with good front and rears who gait like well balanced machines but lack the power and drive I have seen with my own eyes in the past. Good but not great.
