Hi, Patrick.

Thanks for the good news. It does, though, bring two questions to mind.

1. Will the public works department be transparent enough to notify us in the
blindness community that the task is complete and that we can have a few of us
test it out before its completion is official? In that way, if there's anything
defective, they can attend to it with less delay.
2. What details did the public works department give you about the
instalation--cost, type of audio sound, etc.?

The issue will continue to be: How do we as the blindness community proceed
with future projects with the public works department in conjunction with city
council, city management, etc. It is really detremental to us and the
mainstream public to wait for future accidents or fatalities to get more work
done. Rather, this instalation should spur on further accommodation between the
City Hall and the blindness community.

One thing I can see coming out of this is a reevaluation of the cost of a
traffic or walk light. Instead of seeing an APS as an add-on or something
extra, public works could budget it in with total cost of a light pole/walk
signal. That would help them appropriate fund to best service all citizens as
they work on the city's infrastructure.

I received a message from the KC MO Public Works Department earlier today
informing Sheila and I that the intersection at 31st and Main will have an
APS also known as an Accessible Pedestrian signal installed by September 19,
2011!

I totally agree with you Mitch. I feel that the city should do everything
they can to make street crossings easier for people with disabilities.
Especially with the new smart lights they are using, it is making it almost
impossible for blind people to cross streets with out audible signals. I am

tired of the minority shouting out and then the rest of us who want it to
just stand by and loose out.
Hugs, AJ
