You know. . . No O&M instructor will dare endorse this. . .
Nor will any dog guide instructor.
But when I hear other people around me and I'm about to cross a busy street, I
always ask, "Excuse me, could you please let me know when it's safe to cross?"
People are usually glad to help. Hey--it's an instant augmentation to my four
existing senses. I see absolutely nothing wrong with asking. The worst they can
do is ignore me.

Where the poles are located, the buttons on the poles or even if either exist.
How many light-cycles do you wait through looking for something that isn't
there? Oh well, just more complications to overlook <g>.

Her's an additional challenge: If you don't walk a certain route often, how do
you know where the buttons are located?

Hi, Andrea.

You make a good point about the smart signals with traffic lights. I don't know
if Kansas City has them, but I've seen it elsewhere that we can push a little
button that regulates the "walk" light for a traffic cycle or two.

If attached to this system, an audio signal would sound on when the "walk"
sign is up would not confuse for us the sound of the traffic patterns.

Moving forward, do you think that a group of us concerned citizens-comprising
of members from both our local chapters of ACB and NFB form a working committee
that meets regularly with the city to solve this issue? I know Kim mentioned
the NFB traditional stance. But, since we all desire the general welfare and
inclusion of blind&VI people in mainstream society, we all need to work
together.

I totally agree with you Mitch. I feel that the city should do everything they
can to make street crossings easier for people with disabilities.
Especially with the new smart lights they are using, it is making it almost
impossible for blind people to cross streets with out audible signals. I am
tired of the minority shouting out and then the rest of us who want it to just
stand by and loose out.
Hugs, AJ
