I've had good luck making holes for lensboards in metal, plastic and
wood with regular fixed size hole cutters. You must use a drill press
on low speed and go slowly. The material must be clamped down securely
and backed properly. I start by drilling on the black of the board.
After the teeth have gone in a bit (1/16th " or so), I flip the board
over and drill from the front side. The pilot bit makes centering easy.
These circular hole cutters are much cheaper than Forstener bits of the
same size. The Forstener bits only advantage is that they are better at
making flat bottomed holes, but that's not required here. The hole
cutters remove much less material, and so the forces put the on the
board are less. In any case, most methods can be made to work.
