In my climbing youth I was warned about intentional side-effects from silt
in glacial run-off.
Glacial water is simply long-delayed snow-melt: ranging from tens of years
to tens of thousands years.
There is an interesting risk of legacy contaminants from glacial melt.
Think about the radio-actives from atmospheric testing in the 50s & 60s.
That is all trapped in the glaciers,
The coolest thing is the few times I got glacial ice to bubble in my glass.
Glacial ice is created through compression and air bubbles are compressed.
As the ice melts in your cup it will bubble.
The Bow River provides the drinking water from where I live - it is 10%
glacial melt and 45% snow-pack melt. If I let the tap run it is also <50
degrees year round.

Was there research that showed that the illness was due to
drinking overly pure water?

You are right but de-ionized water does it faster. This was--
discovered when explorers who drank glacial melt got sick.
