There are a couple of issues here, one of which is whether really pure water is even necessary, at least for B&W. If you want to be rid of most mineral content a combination of an activated charcoal filter and boiling will do the job.

I don't believe this, based on actual experimentation. Using a TDS meter - which
just measures conductivity of the water - I found virtually no change in TDS
after passing tap water through a Brita filter.

So then I boiled the water, cooled it, and found virtually no change in TDS.
I repeated the experiment, this time boiling the water in Pyrex, to eliminate
the possibility of metal ions leeching from a pan.

Same result. Insignificant reduction in TDS.

What *does* substantially reduce TDS is distillation by directional-freezing.
I have an "ice baller", which is basically an insulated cup that freezes water
in one direction and produces a big clear ball of ice. I measured my tap water
at 180ppm TDS; after making a ball from it, I thawed the ball and measured
the TDS at 11ppm.

I also thawed the "leftover" water in the baller and measured the TDS at
over 200ppm.
