A few years ago I decided that dumping used fixer into the
Municipal sewer system (or wherever) That I would begin
to ‘recover’ the silver.
I poured my used fixer into a carboy and rater than dumping
my “not quite dead’ developer down the drain and poured
As much as I could into the carboy containing the used
Fixer… give it a good ‘shake now and again over the next
few days..you will soon find a precipitate on the bottom of
the carboy. After a week or so, I then syphon off as much
‘clear liquid as possible…without ‘disturbing’ the precipitate
Add more used fixer.. then not quite ‘dead’ developer, shake
and let the precipitate settle
After a few “rounds of the procedure I wash with ‘clean’ water
.. settle and rewash again a few more times…. After adding a last’wash
I shake and filter out the black precipitate which, according to
"what I was told provides’ I have a significant amount of what is known
as “Black Silver” probably the purest form of silver you can get
When ‘dry’ I take it to a friend who has a ‘muffle furnace’ where it
gets melted to provide a blob of silver on coming ‘out’ that is then
sold to a local ‘jewelry repair’ outlet for ‘cash’
MUCH BETTR than pouring it "down the drain”
