It has to be a DC current.  An AC current will take off the silver as fast as it puts it on.

Carbon rods used to be in the carbon-zinc batteries - in the days before all the current exotic ones. I've not seen any (nor have I looked) in years. (a reasonably decent size in the D cells)

As a child they were a source of zinc (and a little bit of hydrochloric acid to make hydrogen for exploding balloons) and carbon rods for (once only) arc lamps. (man did Dad yell when the breakers popped...)

Wall warts...don't know.
