It's important to recover silver. Don't pour it down the drain! Wrong for many
reasons. Most of us don't use enough film/paper to make home silver recovery
practical- and the money possibly gained may not be worth the effort (and the
lovely aroma). If you have a photo lab in your home town, offer them your used
fixer; they'll be happy to take it. That's what I've done for quite some years.
The lab can use the few pennies and I can afford the loss.

A friend of mine who was a professional photographer had a machine that
electroplated the silver out. It had some thin metal disks (stainless steel, I
think) that the silver plated on in a tank full of spent fixer. He would then
remove the disks, flex them and the sheets of silver would pop off. I think he
recovered quite a bit of money doing that and selling the silver.

When ‘dry’ I take it to a friend who has a ‘muffle furnace’ where it
gets melted to provide a blob of silver on coming ‘out’ that is then
sold to a local ‘jewelry repair’ outlet for ‘cash’
MUCH BETTR than pouring it "down the drain”
