I think the net effect of using an AC supply would be to deposit a
mottled coating of silver *very slowly* on both electrodes, which would
be confusing.
On the other hand, an unfiltered DC supply (aka, pulsating DC) *might*
result in a more even coating, or that could be an old wives' tale.
