I open tank process in the dark. I use Tupperware 1 gal tanks to do this, using
either sheet film hangers or - as seen in this picture - I use the basket from
my film washer to hold the sheets in place. (Hangers work better.)

I get excellent consistency this way and it solved the problem of uneven
agitation and dead spots in closed tanks - a real issue if you're doing
Pyro which has a very high local development exhaustion rate.
The only downside to this is that I do need to wear nitrile gloves, eye
protection,
and a lab coat to limit damage from open tank sloshing and contact with things
like Pyro.
I also do rollfilm like this. I started doing this when I discovered that
some of the modern plastic covers on tanks were not fully light tight due
to manufacturing error or tolerance.
Photographers do it in the dark ...
