The system That Jean-David Beyer describes below is what I have used and loved.
Mostly I used it with one of the old color print roller machines like what
probably came with the tank you described. Mine did either continuous rolling
in one direction or it alternated direction periodically. I always got good
results with it. I later graduated to the Jobo processor with that same tank.
It works very well.

I use a Jobo CPE-2 machine with two different Jobo tanks. One takes one
reel and the other takes two. Each reel takes up to six sheets of 4x5
sheet film. It is important to use the new" reels as the old ones were
streaky, even if you put in only four sheets as was sometimes recommended.
The one-reel tank is #2521 and the two-reel tank is #2551. They are
magnet drive which is what the CPE-2 has.
The reels will take three different sizes of film, with 4x5 being the
largest*. And you really want the Jobo loader to load the sheets into
the reels, although it looks as though it could be done by hand. Each
reel comes with two plastic things that snap into the outer edge of the
reel prior to putting everything into the tank. They seem to keep the
film in the reels while processing, but also improve the uniformity of
the processing. The reels are called 2509N, and the older reels (with a
different number) do not work well.
