I agree with you. I wasn't clear about the other point. I would have liked both .1-second intervals and phrases to be available in Creator Mode so one could choose which one was preferable in a given situation. I have no problems with what was done for headings in the Normal Mode. Yes, section levels s should have been addressed in the Normal Mode as well.At 01:21 PM 2/12/2007, you wrote:

Daveed,

I'm sorry but I don't agree with either of your points.

I think you'll find that the 0.1 second adjustments for headings and pages is significantly more straightforward for basic users than the method of having to attach the heading or page markers to phrases and the potential for having to split phrases and so on. Personally, I think it is entirely sensible to include this with the Normal mode of operation.

In my view, the only feature that would have been nice in the Normal mode that is currently only available in Book Creator mode is the function of setting section levels. If this had been included in Normal mode, a basic user would have been able to generate all the things needed for a simple DAISY recording without having to go anywhere near Book Creator mode.

As for the built-in microphone, I'm not sure that I agree with you here either. Admittedly I'm not an audio engineer or a recording professional but, if you use the CF card and you are careful about the recording environment, I think that the quality is very adequate. Obviously if you record to a CD you are bound to pick up some motor noise but, if sound quality is all important, one obviously has to use a microphone that is specifically designed for the particular purpose.

Jamie

I wonder why positioning a heading at .1-second intervals was put in the NOrmal Mode! Alsok, the in-built mic could stand dramatic improvement. Even so, I think the PTR2's overall quality is significantly higher than that of the PTR1. How about changing the list name to Plextalk, by the way!

Phil,

To my mind, the most significant difference between the units is the fact that the PTR2 can be operated in 2 different modes i.e. Normal and Book Creator modes.

Normal mode is intended to make the process of recording as simple as possible by cutting out some of the features that you can get to in Book Creator mode e.g. phrase editing, insert, punch in and overwrite recording etc. The beauty of this, to my mind, is that a fairly complex recorder can be used by relative beginners to achieve good quality recordings in the DAISY format. In other words it is excellent for resource centres, teachers etc.

Book Creator mode gives you back all the features that you would expect in the PTR1 plus the additional benefits highlighted in the message sent by Michael.

Essentially, I think the PTR2 is a much better engineered device in which many of the issues raised by PTR1 users have been incorporated e.g. stereo microphone, key lock preventing accidental switch on in a bag and so on.

The unit is slightly bigger than the PTR1 but, with the repositioning of the controls and the inclusion of the CF card with the unit, it is generally a better overall bundle than the PTR1.

Having said that, your dilemma of whether to get a PTR2 instead of or as well as a PTR1 is harder than a straight debate between the two devices. Unfortunately your debate probably boils down to a question of resources and how much you can afford. In a straight decision, the PTR2 wins hands down in my opinion.

Hope this helps.

Jamie

Actually I probably will keep my old p t r and just take it to the studio for backup purposes. I have been backing up on dat tape and one of those machines is slowly dying. I still would like to here from persons who have, or have had both and some comments about the differences.

Hi Phil:

Funny you should bring this up because I've finally decided to purchase a PTR2, after having owned a PTR1 since December of 2004. Given what I'd likely be able to get for the PTR1, I've just decided that, when I get the PTR2, to leave the PTR1 unit at my worksite. My PTR1 was purchased from RFB, meaning that they configured it to access their CDs. I may ultimately have them (rfb) make this same adjustment to my PTR2, but there's certainly no rush about this since I can read RFB books on the PTR1. (By the way, don't get me started on RFB's nazi-esque concern about insuring that their books aren't pirated!)

I have been limping along with an old p t r one now for say three plus years. I like it fine, it works as far as I no perfectly and, you probably know where I am going. Recently that longing for a new p t r two has been getting increasingly apparent. I could probably sell my old recorder for maybe 500$ and buy a new one for around 1000$ but is their that much difference in the two. Maybe someone out their who has had both or currently owns both can give me some guidance about this conundrum.

  Thanks in advance, Phil Parr.
