Have you heard of espeak?
It sounds quite good (I use it all the time on my box and my mp3 player) and haven't had a problem.
Yes, I think NVDA by default uses it.
It sounds ok, lot better than sapi voices.

Yes, but I believe this may have been compiled with older c++ libs which may cause problems when you need to update them for dependencies...
