[program-l] Re: C# compiler???

Oh Hi David -- Yes, I noticed that windows downloaded the .net framework
with SP2, although I have not seen the compilers anywhere.
Now that would be interesting -- if M$ distributed compilers free with
windows like it did IE -- but no problem at my end! I wouldn't mind that a
bit...
But since the compilers are available free from the website and since .net
is bundled, it is pretty true already!
Interesting...
Oh, where can I read about longhorn? I keep hearing about it, and I know a
number of people here and on the other lists are involved in the
accessibility issues -- since I am also a programmer (somewhat rusty but
still anxious to update) I'd like to know more and perhaps give whatever is
available a try...
Thanks again and happy new year!

Hi Laura,

The .NET Framework is free from Microsoft. I wasn't referring to the Visual
Studio.NET application. As Mark pointed out, you can download the SDK
directly. I'm not sure, but I *think* you even get the compilers if you
just install the .NET Framework from Windows Update. I'll have to check my
laptop to see if they are there, as I don't have Visual Studio.NET installed
on that, but I do have the .NET Framework installed.

Oh, and you *must* have the .NET Framework installed in order to be able to
use C#] and its compiler.

All the best,

David

Hi David -- no I don't have .net as of yet -- I'm looking for something
free, if not complete, to compile book examples. There used to be some
available -- and actually someone else sent me a link -- and the book itself

claimed that Microsoft provided watered-down free compilers and tools for C#

and other .net stuff -- so that's what I'm going to use for now. I don't
want to go ahead and buy visual studio especially with longhorn
coming out soon with some apparent improvements, but just wanted a way to
write some sample programs as I read through this book.
thanks.

Hi Laura,

I thought the C# and VB command line compilers were shipped with the .NET
Framework. Take a look in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\.
You should find a program called CSC.EXE. That is the C# compiler. You
will also find VBC.EXE, which is the VB compiler.

All the best,

David

Hi all --
I've been reading through the book ".NET and XML" by Neil Bornstein (an
O'Reilly book), that I downloaded from bookshare.org. It is quite recent
(2004(, and points to a free C# command line compiler that can be downloaded
from msdn.microsoft.com or something like that. I clicked on the link and
waded through a bunch of pages but could not find a link to download this
compiler. Can anyone help? Does anyone have a copy that I could grab just to
experiment with the examples in the book? I know this has come up before but
I can't find the refs. Thanks in advance and happy new year! --le
