I agree with everything stated herein. (I used to work for Circuit City
many years ago selling audio/video equipment.) There is also 1080i
(interlaced). Many 720p sets are also 1080i. Cable broadcast (even in HD)
is often only 1080i. Where 1080p (or above) shines is when viewing Blu-Ray
DVDs.
And, yes, my Panasonic 50" is really 600Hz, which makes a good deal of
difference when watching high-activity shows or DVDs (e.g., "The Dark
Knight"'s fight scenes.
Plasmas also have "half-life" issues (they dim over time). There is also
the issue of side-lit or back-lit (or both) LCD TVs now.
PCWorld has a buying guide which lists a whole lot of factors to consider
when purchasing a new HD TV.

When comparing picture quality of same size TVs consider.....
1. 720p or 1080p
2. 60, 120 or 240 Hz refresh rate (Plasmas are now saying they have a
600Hz refresh rate)
3. LCD, LED or Plasma
For movies 24fps is the best.
The best non-plasma picture is 1080p LED 240HZ
For budget minded people looking for a mid range price best picture TV:
1080p, 120 or 240HZ in a 37" to 46" LCD-TV or for a low range price
720p 60Hz in a 42" or smaller TV or for upper price range 1080p, 240Hz,
3-D in any size LED TV.
Compare pictures with the different TVs side by side or as close
together as possible. When shopping at Walmart you will NOT see the
best picture a TV can provide because of weak signals, bad lighting,
glare etc.
ALWAYS ask about return policy. If you get a TV home and you are
disappointed with the picture or sound you will want to return it. If
buying for a Christmas gift ask when the return period begins.. at
purchase or on Christmas Day.
If Christmas Day be sure to get that in writing or see it posted in
official return policy signage.
